Demystifying the job interview
Career Services attempts to take the fear out of work seeking students

As if the menacing ghouls and ghastly goblins of Halloween weren't scary enough, university students have one impending fright to deal with: job interviews.

On Thursday, UNLV Career Services used the spookiness of the season to help students overcome interview anxiety, while adding to their job-hunting arsenal.

Spanning three tables in front of the Student Union, the Interview Scream display featured job search pamphlets, advice from Career Services student ambassadors and a video running footage of commentary from UNLV students.

"It's really Interview Stream, but for Halloween it's Interview Scream," said Karla Mitchell of UNLV Career Services.

Jean Marie Pilario, also with Career Services, clarified Interview Stream's origin.

"It's a UNLV program on our site, sponsored by CSUN for all majors to use," she said.

Interview Stream is a program put together by Career Services that allows students with a camera and an Internet connection to record what they would say at job interviews, Mitchell said.

"You get to have the interview, we get to critique it," Mitchell said, adding that it can be helpful for a second set of eyes to give interview pointers and that a virtual mock interview puts some students at ease.

Students without a camera that are interested in the program can use one at the Career Services office.

On a table opposite of the Interview Scream pamphlets display, a yellow poster was set beckoning students with the query "What is your scariest interview question?"

Student responses, in black marker, ranged from the realistic "What's your expected wage?" to the hypothetical "Why are you here?" and the absurd "What is your favorite kind of monkey?"

According to Pilario, even seemingly bizarre questions can potentially be asked at a job interview.

"We've heard from someone saying they were asked 'If you were an animal, what animal would you be?'" Pilario said. "One girl just said she'd rather stay in school forever than have to deal with strange interview questions."

A television screen looped footage recorded earlier of UNLV students giving advice on what not to do at a job interview.

To supplement the information presented at the Interview Scream table, Mitchell and Pilario invited students to visit Career Services any time they needed guidance in their search for a job.

"We'll help you with figuring out what to wear, researching companies and general tips," Mitchell said.

Career Services is located at the Student Services Complex in Suite 301. Information, along with many of their services, is available through hire.unlv.edu.
